Can you save Africanized or hybrid bees?
Yes, if the honey bee hive is located where there is enough space, africanized beehives can be collected (if conditions are safe) and the hive re-queened. This is done by replacing the Africanized queen with a European queen bee. A bees life span is about 4 months; generally within about 4 (four) months the africanized hive will be a European beehive.
In the city it may be too dangerous to remove aggressive africanized bees alive. Once collected they need to be transported to an apiary for the purpose of the re-queening and de-feralization, all of which is may cause greater financial expense than benefit.
Often africanized honeybees are seen as bad bees in addition to being mistaken for regular honey bees. Often it can be misrepresented by a bee guy or exterminator that kills bees. Visit our bee guy page for more info. To learn more about Africanized bees visit our africanized honeybees.

Sharon G. | For over a year we have had a hive living in an old doghouse in the corner of the backyard that is surrounded by tall bamboo. Last week after the passing of hurricane Alex, the hive become agressive. For the second week in a row, the bees have come out to attack the lawnmower. Luckily no one was severely bitten, but it worries me now. I have received two estimates to have the bees exterminated, but I would prefer not to have the bees killed. Please contact me and let me know what can be done.
Beekeeper: Sharon,
Interesting that they are just now becoming aggressive... I'm sorry to hear they that are causing you troubles. Lawnmowers are certainly known to agitate honey bees; the exhaust and vibration makes them think the hive is in jeopardy.
Most companies in your area will just want to exterminate a hive that is that aggressive, and we don't have any live bee removal experts in the area. Beekeepers don't really want aggressive bees, either.
One idea is to see if there is somebody that will wrap the doghouse in plastic and take the entire doghouse away, and drop it on some open land, then rip off the plastic. As long as it's not too heavy and hard to get into a truck, it might be an alternative to killing the bees.
Good luck, and steer clear of the bees for now.
